Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for overall health, and at HD Dental Studio, we always emphasise the importance of Preventive Dentistry. Part of this preventive approach includes the daily routine of flossing.
While traditional string dental floss has been the go-to and the golden standard for as long as we can remember, the relative recent introduction of commercial water flosser has introduced a new dynamic to our personal dental care.
Tip: Water flosser should be used together with string dental floss to achieve the best results. However for those that are not able to use string dental floss, the water flosser presents a very appealing and effective alternative.

The tried and true: String Dental Floss
Traditional string floss is effective in removing food particles and plaque from between the teeth and along the gum line. At HD Dental Studio, we recommend flossing with string at least once a day to help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. The technique, thoroughness and consistency of flossing are key to its effectiveness. You do not want plaque to build up as it can cause many dental problems.

BLUE CORNER
The new kid on the block: Water Flosser
Water flosser offers a different approach. These devices use a stream of pulsating water to clean between teeth and below the gumline. Studies have shown that water flossers are particularly beneficial for individuals with braces, dental implants, or those who find traditional flossing challenging. Water flosser can be an excellent addition to your oral hygiene routine, especially for those who struggle with string floss.
Comparing the Benefits
Research indicates that water flossers are as effective as traditional floss in reducing signs of gingivitis and plaque buildup. Some studies suggest that water flossers may even be more effective at reducing gingival bleeding compared to string floss. However, it is important to note that water flossers are not a replacement for string floss but rather a complementary tool.
Water flosser offers ease of use and can be very similar use case scenario to using a tooth brush. Fill the water tank with lukewarm water, and away you go.
String dental floss offers low cost solution and while it may be difficult to use sometimes; with all the different yoga poses for your fingers to move around your mouth. It can however reach areas where water flosser may miss. Sometimes water flosser is not powerful enough to expel the stuck food particles, and a more direct approach like string floss is needed as it gives you more control than a water flosser.
When used together, they can provide a more comprehensive clean as they are complimentary to each other.

At HD Dental Studio, we recommend incorporating both traditional string dental floss and water flosser into your dental routine for optimal oral health. Each method has its unique benefits, and when used in conjunction with each other, they can provide a thorough clean that contributes to the prevention of dental issues. Remember, the best dental routine is one that you can consistently follow and suits your individual needs.
